Finishes- Rubio Monocoat
As the name implies, you only apply one coat to the wood and a chemical reaction with the cellulose content in the wood bonds the finish to the wood. We have used finishing oil and wax for a lot of years now and didn't expect to find anything better, but ever ready to try new things, when the importers asked us to try it out, an off-cut was sanded up, Monocoat applied following the instructions and then used as a coaster in the workshop and to my surprise it stayed looking good after a week of wet bottomed hot mugs being stood on it.
So a coffee table that had a damaged top and needed to be sanded clean and refinished was done in Monocoat. This is one of our stock items and the lovely feel of it has caused many comments by the public who have seen it at the last 3 shows we have been to. The latest of our commissions have been finished with Monocoat and although I have put a light coat of wax on the top to hide some minor defects in the wood it has only helped with the look of the finished pieces. Please see Directions of Use.
We now have Monocoat in stock and are ready to supply it to you by mail order or from the workshop. Although not the cheapest of finishes, the advantages more than make up for the cost and the time saving alone justifies spending a little bit more.
We have been using Monocoat for 3 years now and I think it is one of the best finishing products on the market, don't let the cost put you off trying it out, as one of my students who came back for his 3rd tin put it "worth every penny".

Here are some of the advantages we have found when using Monocoat:
One coat, leave overnight and then buff for a natural finish, (although I put a wax on top to get an even better shine and feel).
Extremely good coverage rate (I finished a large bookcase and only used 11/2" out of a litre tin).
Food safe when dry.
Available in small or large quantities.
Heat and water resistant after it has fully cured.
It has a nice smell (reminds me of marzipan).
No overlapping marks, a unique feature of the product. The product re-disperses/re-emulsifies itself allowing partial application of an area of the wood if required. This feature also gives easier workability. Spills or other marks are easily covered and repaired.
Cost
It has worked out at £38.50 for 1/2 Litre tin and £65.00 for a 1 Litre tin. This includes post and packing.
