Oak Coffee Tables
We are getting so many enquiries for our Oak coffee tables that I thought there should be a separate page just for the different Coffee tables that we make.
This is where you can let your imagination run wild. we can make many types of coffee tables from simple ones costing as little as £300 to something more dramatic costing in excess of £3000, but whichever you choose they all have some things in common.
They are made just for you from solid wood. There are no mouldings concealing chipboard or MDF, just the real thing. If you ask for the coffee table to be made from Oak that is what you will get.
There are only 2 of us in the workshop so you can phone with your enquiry and know that you are talking to the man who will be making the table for you.
Mark and I take a lot of pride in our work and we love what we do, the personal challenge for us is to make the most interesting coffee table that we can within the constraints of the budget that you set.
All of our Coffee Tables come with a built in wow! factor because we select the best grain match that we can, and by book-matching the boards we can achieve some stunning grain effects
One of the comments that I hear the most is: "what if the top gets scratched?" Well, after you take the screwdriver off little Johnny, you send it back to us and, because it is a solid wooden top, often over an inch thick. we can remove the scratch completely, refinish it and there it is brand new again.
Our standard finish is Monocoat and wax, this is a great finish for resisting ring marks. Just a rub over with a duster is all it needs most of the time but once or twice a year a good wax polish will have it looking lovely again. and, of course, as the wood ages it will look better and better as the patina begins to establish on the surface.
So what other things can we offer?
Inlays can add another dimension to your Oak coffee table, this is a technique where we inlay a piece of book-matched Burr into a recess we make in the table top. This is usually about 3/8" deep and into that we fit the inlay and around the edge of the inlay goes a banding to really set it off.
We can also add a string line in a contrasting colour normally black or white, this can be in a geometric pattern of your choice.
Drawers can also be added, although the style of the table will dictate where we can fit them. We can, in some cases, fit a secret drawer or compartment to your coffee table, some of them being spring loaded so you need to press a hidden release to access the drawer.
We have, in the past, fitted Limestone fossils into our table tops but this is dependent on the availability of the fossils as they are not always easy to source, but phone us to find out what we can do.
If you are into chess or other board games we can inlay the top of your table with the board and fit a drawer to hold the pieces.
What other woods can we offer?
Oak is the obvious one and the most requested but we can also offer you:
Standard Oak, very nice clean with strong Medullary ray markings.
Brown/Tiger Oak, as above with a chocolate brown stripes in it.
Pippy Oak, like standard but with clusters of small knots, the grain tends to swirl more and be even more interesting.
Elm, red/brown colour with lots of big swirling patterns, this looks very special when it is book-matched.
Sapele, Mahogany type (from managed plantations in Africa) Now this looks really nice with a contrasting wood, say Maple or Sycamore, for the drawer fronts and some string lining.
Cherry, we have been using this quite a lot lately, the superior grade that we use has nice patterns in the grain but you have to wait for a year or two for the colour to deepen down to its final russet brown when it looks at its best.
Curly Maple, now this is unusual but if you want a white wood, this is the one. The grain looks like bubbles in glass, and with a black inlay we can get a very nice "art deco" look to the piece.
I hope this has got you thinking about just what you would really like, and not just accept some mass produced item when you can have something special in front of you.
